Like anything (or anyone!) Athena Luxe candles thrive with just a little bit of tender love and care.
Why does Athena Luxe use 100% soy wax?
Many of the standard candles on the market use paraffin wax – derived from petroleum, coal, or shale oil fossil fuels – which burns with a black soot and releases toxins. Athena Luxe has sourced a premium soy wax which is a natural, renewable, and 100% biodegradable product made from vegetable soybean. As it has a lower melting point than paraffin, it generally burns longer and more evenly which is ideal for distributing scents.
What should I do on my first burn?
When lighting your candle for the first time, we recommend letting it burn for 3 to 4 hours. This allows it to heat all the way to the edges and melt down evenly, which helps prevent the wick from ‘tunnelling’ in future burns. Tunneling is where the wick buries itself in a narrow hole and drowns in wax.
And after that?
After each burn it’s a great idea to lightly trim the wick with scissors to keep it around the ideal length of 6-8mm. If it’s too long it can burn too hot and unevenly, too short and it may not burn hot enough which can cause it to form a tunnel.
How do I fix tunneling?
Tunneling can happen with any larger candle, but fortunately it’s easily fixed. Simply wrap a piece of aluminum foil around the rim of the candle and fold it down to cover the built up wax, leaving the centre open for the wick. Then light the candle and the foil will heat up and melt the excess wax, which will flow down and even up the candle surface.
Where should I store my soy candles?
If you keep them in a cool and dry place, like a cupboard or drawer, soy wax candles can comfortably last 2 years in storage. They can melt if exposed to heat or direct sun.
Important: What about safety?
What is the white coating on my candle?
If you see a light white coating on the surface of your candle, don’t worry. This is called ‘frosting’ and is a crystalline layer that can form on vegetable waxes. It is a natural process that happens when the wax tries to return to its natural state after burning and has no impact on the lifetime or the burn of the candle.
How can I reuse my candle container?
Made from premium quality glass, our containers can live again as holders for pencils or toiletries, tea lights or cut flowers. To remove any leftover wax, simply fill them with boiling water to melt the wax, let the water cool and the wax will solidify and float to the top to be strained off. Note: Do not pour wax down the drain as it can clog sinks when it hardens. Lastly, scrape any wax residue and clean with soapy water.
